Safety performance
- We reduced our Lost-Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR) by 20.1 per cent, from 1.94 injuries per million hours worked the previous year to 1.55 this year. We also reduced our Total Recordable Injury Frequency Rate (TRIFR) from 7.49 injuries per million hours worked the previous year to 6.78 in the past 12 months, a reduction of 9.5 per cent.
- We launched our Mandatory Safety Rules, which are designed to protect employees and contractors from serious injury or death. The 10 rules apply to everyone working in all Transfield Services operations around the world, including our subsidiary companies.
- We trained more than 1,400 of our business leaders in the implementation of the Mandatory Safety Rules.
- On 8 June 2010, every Transfield Services site and office around the world took part in a global safety stand down highlighting our safety imperatives.
- Our TIMEC business was awarded 22 National Petrochemical and Refiners Association (NPRA) Meritorious Safety Awards, confirming its position in the top one per cent of contractors for safety in the United States refining market. TIMEC was honoured by the NPRA for its exceptional focus and performance in safety.
Innovation
- USM’s Project Transform has taken significant recurring costs out of the business by consolidating multiple legacy systems and processes into one standard infrastructure platform. This fully integrated strategy has delivered many benefits to our customers including:
- single point of accountability via a dedicated account management team
- standardised systems and processes to enhance service delivery
- improved reporting and visibility on their facilities maintenance (FM) spend, and
- leveraged enterprise knowledge in the development and implementation of specific facilities management strategies for their organisations.
- Our FutureFlow alliance is highly awarded for its sustainable and innovative approach to water management. The awards include 2010 Australian Water Association Awards for Project Innovation, the 2009 Engineers Australia Excellence Award, Victorian Division for Infrastructure Projects over $20 million and a prestigious International Water Award for Project Innovation.
- Our Chairman, Tony Shepherd, was honoured with a special award for Services to Construction from the Australian Constructors Association (ACA). The award recognises people considered to be pioneers in the construction industry and whose business acumen, engineering skills, perseverance, personal and corporate skills have contributed greatly to the achievements of the industry as a whole.
Training and development
- In 2009, as a Registered Training Organisation, we trained 7,662 people including subcontractors in Australia. In New Zealand, as a registered Private Training Establishment, we trained 5,711 people.
- By the end of 2009, more than 100 of our senior business leaders participated in our Enterprise Leaders Program. The year-long program develops our leaders so they can develop their people and the capacity of the Company to generate the best results for our customers, shareholders and stakeholders.
- The Australian business reported the outcomes from the first 12 months of its Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) to members of Reconciliation Australia’s Executive. We achieved approximately 70 per cent of our targets. Significant achievements for our first year included:
- improving our Indigenous supplier relationships, and
- reviewing and implementing Indigenous-related human resources policies.
Sustainability
- For us, sustainability is about improving the strength and performance of our Company, protecting and developing our people, contributing to the communities in which we work and minimising impacts on the environment.
