FutureFlow Alliance wins national water award

12 March 2010

FutureFlow has been awarded the national Infrastructure Project Innovation Award at the 2010 Australian Water Association National Water Awards for a range of innovative irrigation and watersaving projects.

FutureFlow, an alliance between Goulburn-Murray Water, Transfield Services, Sinclair Knight Merz and Comdain, won the Victorian award last year.

The award recognises the successful completion of $290 million of works on the Northern Victoria Irrigation Renewal Project (NVIRP) as well as final works on the Central Goulburn 1-4 and Shepparton Modernisation projects. The projects will deliver average water savings of 94 gigalitres per year.

The judges said the initiative was an innovative reference project with the potential for wide application across Australia. They commended the effective utilization of technology bringing irrigation projects into the 21st century.

Transfield Services’ Executive General Manager, Infrastructure Services, Mr Jim Gaha, said: “The project upgraded the irrigation network using best practice technology and delivery methodology while engaging with the community to leave a legacy for future generations.”

“The AWA has said that FutureFlow was judged a win for irrigators, the environment and water efficiency. This feedback is evidence that Transfield Services is providing sustainable water solutions through innovative delivery.”

The complete project was delivered in 18 months and achieved:

  • 1,680 FlumeGates installed for automatic channel flow control, monitoring and controlling of the channel delivery system
  • 3,740 meters installed
  • 26 kilometres of irrigation channel lined with plastic lining
  • 27 kilometres of pipeline to replace open channels installed
  • 31 communication towers installed or upgraded, and
  • 50 kilometres of irrigation channel and hundreds of unused irrigation assets removed.

To date, this has been the largest and fastest constructed channel automation system in Australia and possibly the world. The alliance also won the Engineers Australia Award in Victoria 2009 for Infrastructure Projects over $20 million.

The alliance was nominated for the national awards when it won the Australian Water Association Victorian Division’s Infrastructure Innovation Award in December 2009. The alliance has now been nominated for the International Water Association (IWA) Awards in September 2010.
