Safety first approach leads to external recognition

Transfield Worley Electrician Alan Davies has been successful in winning the APPEA Health and Safety Representative (HSR) of the Year Award.

Mr Davies, who works at the Karratha Gas Plant in Western Australia, was presented the award at the recent APPEA HSR Forum in Perth. The annual award recognises individuals within the Australian oil and gas industry who have been outstanding in their contribution to the health and safety of their fellow workers.

Transfield Worley HSE Manager Luc Herwin said the recognition was well deserved for a staff member who tirelessly drives safety initiatives.

“Alan is the current site safety committee Chairman, representing all Transfield Services employees here in Karratha,” explained Mr Herwin. “He also works closely with the client to ensure the site remains as safe as possible for everyone – which can be challenging as it is a very hazardous facility.

“Alan is also an experienced electrician who has been a positive mentor to many within his own work group. He does this without being asked, so it is fantastic to finally see him recognised with this award.”

Mr Herwin also singled out a situation where Mr Davies identified a hazard on site after he found a rotted ginny wheel rope. He proactively engaged management about the hazard, which has now led to all ginny wheels being removed when not in use.
