Mandatory Safety Rules

Our most important goals is to drive our safety performance to our vision, ‘no injuries to anyone, any time.’ In pursuit of this goal we recognised that our people are exposed to a common set of risks that, if not controlled properly, will result in serious injury or worse. That’s why , in June 2010, we introduced our Ten Mandatory Safety Rules.

Since then we have devoted considerable effort to deploying them to all of our operations and rigorously monitoring compliance to them. The numbers that have been trained, and continue to be trained are enormous, as is the management effort that has been put into remedying deficiencies. But the efforts are paying dividends; the rules are known and discussed in even the most remote of our locations and behaviours have improved.

The rules, which are non-negotiable, are:

  • always verify and tag or lock all energy isolations
  • never remove another person’s Danger Tag or Personal Lock without written authorisation
  • always operate equipment and machinery within defined safety limits
  • never begin a skilled task or operate equipment and machinery unless qualified
  • always obtain authorisation before entering a confined space
  • never disable or override a safety device without written authorisation
  • always protect against falling where you can fall more than 2.0 metres (6 Feet)
  • never work or travel under a suspended load
  • always wear seatbelts when a vehicle is in motion, and
  • never consume or be under the influence of illicit drugs while at work.

The rules must be applied in conjunction with all relevant laws, company policies, the code of business conduct, house rules, industrial instruments, global standards, principal risk controls, fair play and any other processes, procedures and work instructions that are applicable to the workplace.
